One missing policy page can suspend your account.

FeedShield catches issues like this automatically. Run a free audit before it costs you.

The Checkout as a Trust Signal

Google evaluates your checkout flow as part of its website quality assessment. A checkout that works perfectly but fails trust criteria will still trigger a policy flag. The goal isn't just functionality — it's demonstrating that customers are safe to buy from you.

Required Elements

HTTPS on every checkout step Not just the payment page — the cart page, address entry, payment details, and order confirmation must all be served over HTTPS. Test by looking at the browser address bar on each step.

Guest checkout option Google's policy explicitly requires that customers can purchase without creating an account. If your platform only shows "Create an account to continue," you will fail this check. Most platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce) have guest checkout as a configurable option.

Visible payment methods The payment methods you accept must be visible before the customer is asked to enter card details. Display the logos (Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, etc.) on the payment page or cart page. Many Shopify themes include this automatically.

Price consistency The total shown at each step must not increase unexpectedly. Shipping and tax can be added — but adding hidden fees at the final step that weren't disclosed on the product page or cart is a policy violation.

Elements That Help but Aren't Required

  • SSL trust badge (e.g., Norton Secured, McAfee SECURE)
  • "Your information is secure" text near the payment form
  • Clear order summary on the payment page
  • Multiple payment methods (credit card, PayPal, Shop Pay)

Testing Your Checkout

Test as a new visitor in incognito mode:

  1. Add to cart from a product page
  2. Proceed through checkout as a guest
  3. Verify HTTPS padlock on every page
  4. Confirm payment methods are visible
  5. Verify the price matches what was shown on the product page
