Google Shopping Image Requirements: The Complete Guide
Every technical and content requirement for product images in Google Shopping, including size, format, and prohibited content.
Non-compliant images are silently disapproving your listings.
FeedShield catches issues like this automatically. Run a free audit before it costs you.
Minimum Technical Requirements
Size — Minimum 100x100 pixels. For non-apparel products, recommended minimum is 800x800px. For apparel, 250x250px minimum applies.
Format — JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP, or TIFF. JPEG preferred for standard product images.
File size — Maximum 16 megabytes.
URL — Must return a 200 HTTP status. Must be crawlable (not blocked by robots.txt). Redirects are acceptable but Google recommends direct links.
Recommended Specifications
For best performance in Shopping:
- •800x800px minimum, 1500x1500px recommended
- •Square aspect ratio (1:1)
- •White or light neutral background for non-apparel
- •Product centered and filling 75–90% of the frame
Prohibited Image Content
The following will result in disapproval:
- •Promotional text, watermarks, or overlay text on the image
- •Borders around the image
- •Placeholder images or generic silhouettes
- •Low-resolution images that are blurry or pixelated
- •Stock photos not showing the actual product being sold
- •Multiple images combined into a collage as the main image
Lifestyle Images
Google allows lifestyle images (product in use, in context) as the main image for apparel and some other categories. For non-apparel, the main image (image_link) should be the product on a clean background. Lifestyle images can be submitted in the additional_image_link attribute.
Automatic Image Improvements
GMC has an automatic image improvement feature that removes promotional text and adjusts image quality. You can enable this in your account settings. It's useful but not a substitute for uploading compliant images from the start.
Checking Image Status
In GMC, go to Products > Diagnostics. Filter by image-related disapproval reasons. The most common are: image too small, invalid image URL, and promotional overlay text detected.
