What Are Free Shopping Listings?
Google expanded Shopping to include free, organic product listings in 2020. These appear in the Shopping tab alongside paid ads, and some appear in the main search results. There is no cost per click — it's equivalent to organic SEO for your products.
Requirements to Qualify
Free listings use the same data you submit to Google Merchant Center. To be eligible:
- •Your GMC account must be in good standing (no active suspensions)
- •Your products must comply with Shopping policies
- •Your feed must be accurate and up to date
- •Surfaces Across Google must be enabled in your GMC account (Settings > Manage programs)
Enabling Free Listings
In GMC, go to Growth > Manage programs. Find "Free product listings" and click Get started. The setup is straightforward — you accept terms and your eligible products begin appearing in free listings within a few days.
Feed Quality for Free Listings
Free listings use the same quality signals as paid ads, but performance is also affected by:
Title relevance — Titles that match how people actually search for your product type perform better. Include brand, key attributes, and model numbers.
Product type accuracy — Correct google_product_category and product_type help Google understand what you're selling.
Price competitiveness — Google's free listings can show a price comparison badge. Products priced significantly higher than comparable items may appear less prominently.
Review data — If you have a Google Customer Reviews program set up or reviews via structured data, these can show on free listings.
Monitoring Free Listing Performance
In GMC, go to Performance > Dashboard. Filter by "Free listings" to see impressions, clicks, and click-through rate. Compare to paid Shopping campaigns to understand where each channel is strongest.
