What Google Means by "Untrustworthy Checkout"
Google's quality team evaluates your checkout flow against a set of trust criteria. If any stage of the process raises red flags, the account gets flagged for misrepresentation — specifically the "untrustworthy checkout" sub-category.
This is not about your checkout being broken. A checkout can function perfectly and still fail Google's trust assessment.
The Checkout Trust Checklist
HTTPS on every checkout page The entire checkout must be served over HTTPS — not just the payment page. If even one page in the funnel loads over HTTP, Google flags it. Check your cart page, account creation page, and order confirmation page as well as the payment step.
Visible payment method logos Checkout must clearly display accepted payment methods before the customer enters card details. Visa, Mastercard, PayPal logos (or whatever you accept) should be visible on the payment page without requiring the user to look for them.
Guest checkout available Google's policy states that users must be able to complete a purchase without creating an account. If account creation is mandatory, you will fail this check. Add a "Continue as Guest" option.
No misleading urgency Fake countdown timers, false stock counts ("Only 3 left!" when you have 300), or pressure tactics Google can identify as deceptive will trigger a flag.
Consistent pricing through the funnel The price shown on the product page must match the price in the cart and at checkout (before any taxes or shipping are added). Adding fees at the final step that weren't disclosed earlier is a common trigger.
Working order confirmation Google's reviewers complete test purchases. If the order confirmation page errors out, returns a 404, or doesn't load correctly, it flags the checkout as untrustworthy.
How to Test Your Own Checkout
- •Open your site in an incognito window (to simulate a first-time visitor)
- •Find a product via search (don't navigate directly)
- •Add to cart and complete checkout using a test payment method
- •Verify the confirmation page loads and shows order details
- •Repeat on mobile (Chrome, Safari)
- •Check the browser padlock is green/locked on every step
After Fixing: Documenting for Your Appeal
When you submit your appeal, briefly describe what you changed. "Added guest checkout option, confirmed HTTPS on all checkout pages, added payment method logos to the payment step." Screenshots help if support requests them.
